This month, our communities met in Chicago for KubeCon + CloudNativeCon North America, where AI topics were front and center. Two new LF Research reports have been published: the World of Open Source Global Spotlight and the 2023 State of Open Source in Financial Services. We also launched two new projects, the App Defense Alliance and DAOS Foundation, and announced an intent to form the High Performance Software Foundation. And as the LF delegation heads to COP28 in Dubai, we’re excited to share a preview of Linux Foundation and OS-Climate events. LF projects unite at COP28 to harness open source for sustainable development

The Linux Foundation's Sustainability Initiative highlights the potential of technology to unlock additional revenue in the technology sector and promote sustainable practices across multiple domains.

As such, The Linux Foundation is set to host a pivotal panel at COP28, focusing on the role of open source technology in driving sustainable development. Titled "The Power of Open Source Technology Collaboration in Finance, Business, Policy, and Economic Development for a Net Zero Transition," the event underscores the significance of digital technology, particularly open source, in achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

  • This 60-minute discussion, scheduled for December 6th in the Blue Zone's Innovation Thematic Area (click to sign up) and live-streamed, will explore how various projects and communities within the Linux Foundation contribute to the UN SDGs. The panel will explore the impact of open source software, hardware, standards, content, and data on sustainable development. Attendees will learn the crucial role of open source in building sustainable infrastructure.

Two other events focusing on OS-Climate projects will occur on December 4th from 15:00 - 16:00 GST and December 5th from 16:30 - 17:30 GST.

  • The first event will focus on Open Source Analytic Tools for Physical Risk and Resilience, led by BNP Paribas; Sector Alignment for Net Zero Investing, led by Allianz; the OS-Climate Data Mesh Supporting Federated Sourcing and Access for Data Needed for Climate Alignment, led by Red Hat; and the launch of OS-Climate new open data offerings, Sovereign Bond Footprint Data based on Partnership for Carbon Accounting Financials (PCAF) methodology, which will help realign to Paris Accord goals the $87 Trillion in sovereign bonds making up about 30% of all pension fund and insurance company investments globally.
  • The second event will kick off the global collaboration phase of the Transition Scenario Analysis initiative led by Capgemini to build the world’s most powerful modeling platform for climate transition decision-making in business, finance, policy, and economic development. New project announcements

High Performance Software Foundation

The Linux Foundation has announced its intent to form the High Performance Software Foundation (HPSF) to advance high performance computing (HPC). HPSF aims to develop a portable software stack for HPC, making it more accessible and fostering collaboration in development.

The foundation will leverage global initiatives like the U.S. Department of Energy's Exascale Computing Project and the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking to optimize computing across diverse architectures. HPSF, as a neutral hub under the Linux Foundation, will unite industry, academia, and government in advancing scientific software.

Supported by key players like Amazon Web Services and NVIDIA, HPSF will form a technical advisory committee to guide HPC projects. The Foundation launches with projects like Spack, Kokkos, and WarpX, focusing on continuous integration, software stacks, and performance testing for HPC.

The HPSF welcomes participation from the HPC community and will present its vision at the ACM/IEEE Supercomputing Conference (SC23). For more information, visit http://hpsf.io/.

App Defense Alliance

The App Defense Alliance, initially established by Google for Android app security, has now joined the Joint Development Foundation under the Linux Foundation. This new alliance brings together technology leaders Google, Meta, and Microsoft as the steering committee. The Alliance aims to strengthen app security across various platforms, and foster collaborative implementation of industry-wide standards. The transition to the Joint Development Foundation reflects a collective commitment to enhancing digital security and trust in apps. This integration marks a practical step in creating a more secure digital environment, ensuring users and developers benefit from higher security standards. The Alliance encourages other organizations interested in app security to join and contribute to this collaborative effort.

DAOS Foundation

The Linux Foundation has announced the launch of the DAOS Foundation, which aims to enhance the governance and development of the Distributed Asynchronous Object Storage (DAOS) project. With support from leading organizations like Argonne National Laboratory, Enakta Labs, Google Cloud, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, and Intel, the Foundation is set to accelerate advancements in High Performance Computing (HPC) and AI/ML workloads.

DAOS is a high-performance, open source storage system designed to improve traditional storage solutions for HPC and AI applications. It utilizes a distributed key-value storage architecture, optimizing performance and cost. Intel has been a key contributor to DAOS since 2012, and the creation of the DAOS Foundation under the Linux Foundation ensures the project's continued growth as an open source initiative.

The DAOS Foundation is open for membership at various levels, allowing participants to contribute to its governance and technical development. For more information, visit the DAOS Foundation website at https://foundation.daos.io/.

Event recap: KubeCon + CloudNativeCon North America

KubeCon + CloudNativeCon North America 2023, held in Chicago from November 6- 9, was a landmark event that underscored the CNCF's commitment to shaping the future of technology. This year's conference illuminated a crucial trend: AI is at the forefront of technological discussion and decision-making. 

At the heart of AI's rapid evolution are the robust underlying systems - networking, compute, and a plethora of sophisticated software. The conference highlighted that AI applications, often powered by Large Language Models (LLMs) at their core, are integrally dependent on cloud-native environments, advanced security measures, and other support systems our projects offer.

KubeCon + CloudNativeCon NA 2023 was more than just a conference; it was a testament to our journey towards a more interconnected and AI-driven technological future, and the Linux Foundation is at the forefront of this exciting journey.

LF Research

World of Open Source: Global Spotlight 2023

Earlier this year, Linux Foundation Research launched a worldwide survey on open source trends. The Global Spotlight report covers a wide range of opportunities and concerns related to open source worldwide, incorporating regional comparisons of open source adoption, contribution, value propositions, and sustainability. Findings indicate that open source use is widespread across regions and that its value is well understood, but there is still an opportunity to increase contributions and the presence of OSPOs. Comparing across regions, Europe ranked highest in use and contribution, and government adoption, while Asia-Pacific ranked lowest in these categories. The 2023 State of Open Source in Financial Services

Linux Foundation Research has partnered with the Fintech Open Source Foundation (FINOS) for the last three years to study the financial services industry's use, contribution, and participation in open source. In its third year, the annual State of Open Source in Financial Services report analyzes quantitative and qualitative data to understand industry-wide trends in open source adoption, from banking to asset management to hedge funds. Compared with the 2021 and 2022 reports, this analysis illustrates directional shifts in the use and contribution of open source software. It acts as a resource for industry leaders to create or refine their open source strategy.

Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE): At this event, LFX Mentorship spread the word on LFX Mentorships, LFLive webinars, LF Training, and other learning resources created to empower the next generation of new open source developers was a success, and connected and chatted with several aspiring open source developers from US colleges.

  • As part of the Making Our Strong Community Stronger initiative, the Open Mainframe Project recently hosted a webinar to showcase the different roles in the tech industry, specifically the mainframe sector, and mentorship and hiring programs that encourage and support diverse applicants from a global scale.   • In this month’s episode of the “I Am A Mainframer” podcast, hosted by Steven Dickens of The Futurum Group, guest Domenico D’Alterio shares insights into his career and the evolving mainframe industry. Currently working on the Zowe open source project at IBM, Domenico discusses how he joined IBM in 1999 as a developer and later transitioned into managerial and product manager roles.   • Ryan Rugg, Head of Digital Assets for Citi’s TTS business, joined Hyperledger Foundations’s Karen Ottoni for a conversation about Moving Value at the Speed of Data as part of Open Source in Finance Forum.
  • Colombia’s stock exchange announced it will move its crowdfunding platform, a2censo, to a blockchain-based system built using Hyperledger Besu and Hyperledger Fabric.
  • At an industry meeting, Brazil’s Central Bank president commented that Drex, the Hyperledger Besu-based CBDC that Brazil is piloting, will reduce business costs.
  • Hindustan Petroleum (HPCL), India’s state refiner, is launching a blockchain system to verify purchase orders. The system is built using a parallel or hybrid network approach combining a public blockchain and a private Hyperledger Fabric blockchain.

  • LF Edge’s EdgeX Foundry announced the availability of the new Long-Term Support (LTS) release of its open source edge data platform (EdgeX 3.1 “Napa” release). The new release emphasizes enhanced usability and platform configuration. 
  • A summary of the recent Edge Native AI Hackathon, co-hosted by LF Edge, ETSI, and Open Compute Project, is posted on the blog. The outline includes information about the finalist teams, including the winning team “Green Cyclops.”

LF Energy

  • A volunteer group of LF Energy members successfully applied to host an Energy Devroom at FOSDEM 2024. The Devroom, which will take place in person in Brussels at FOSDEM on February 3, accepts speaking proposals through December 1. Apply here to speak.
  • On January 18, the Power Grid Model community will host a free online workshop to explore the project’s advantages over other software and provide hands-on experience performing power flow calculations for a single timestep, N-1, and time series.
  • LF Energy community members were interviewed for a four-part blog series on the state of digitalization of energy systems. Read about the current state, major challenges, technologies helping solve those challenges, and the part open source has to play.
  • The Chinchilla Squeaks Podcast spoke to LF Energy Interim Executive Director Arpit Joshipura about the role of open source in advancing energy technologies. Listen here.

LF Networking

  • LF Networking and CNCF announced the projects will combine their telecom initiatives to create a unified Linux Foundation (LF) Telecom front for Cloud Native Networking. The new initiative will bring various activities from the CNCF and LFN under one roof (hosted by LF Networking). It will continue to develop additional guidelines and tools for Cloud Native Network transformation. 
  • CTO Ranny Haiby presented at the Decoding Tech Zone conference in Toronto. You can watch his session, “Advancing Innovation Through Open Networking & Edge Ecosystems,” here (7:30)

  • The Call for Proposals (CFP) for the 2024 Open Networking & Edge (ONE) Summit will close on December 3, 2023.  Industry thought leaders are encouraged to submit to speak across an updated collection of tracks to be part of the event, happening April 29-May 1 in San Jose, CA. 
  • The LFN Developer & Testing Forum took place in Budapest, Hungary, November 14-16, where LFN ecosystem developers gathered in person and virtually to accelerate the future of networking.  Session videos & content will be available shortly. 
  • Anuket, LFN’s Cloud Native Infrastructure modeling and testing project, recently issued its Orinco release, which includes updates to its Reference Model and Reference Architecture.
  • The next ONE Summit Regional Day happens November 30 in Bangalore, India, with member company Infosys. The packed agenda will feature local ecosystem experts sharing insights across the open networking and edge space. Register for free today.

Open Programmable Infrastructure (OPI) Project

  • The 2023 OCP Global Summit, which took place in San Jose, California, on October 17-19, had more than 4,400 attendees from 891 organizations from 35 countries worldwide. OPI Project was on-site at the event in the Arm booth with a new use case demo developed by premier members Marvell Technology, F5, and Arm. The first-ever use case demo is built on the OPI framework and uses it to offload key infrastructure management services. This will lower cloud and data center operators’ TCO and increase their general compute capacity by freeing up CPU cores for more user applications. Watch the video.
  • Marc Meunier,  Director of Ecosystem at Arm and OPI Project Governing Board Member, also presented a session titled “Deploying DPUs at Scale.” Watch the video.

OpenJS Foundation

  • Is your website a security risk? In a survey commissioned by IDC, we found that of 1.9 billion websites, almost 90% use jQuery, and 1/3 require an upgrade. Learn more about it on our blog.
  • Talks from the Node.js Collaborator Summit and OpenJS World EU are now available on YouTube! Hear from key community members about the latest JavaScript technologies.
  • In our latest Node.js security report, we regularly worked on security reports and discussed creating an SBOM for Node.js.

OpenSSF

Events:

  • We have a great day of session presentations, panels, and lightning talks lined up on December 4th for OpenSSF Day Japan, colocated with Open Source Summit Japan in Tokyo, Japan. Plan to discuss the latest and greatest in ongoing efforts to secure the Open Source Software (OSS) ecosystem.
  • On September 18, we hosted OpenSSF Day Europe at the Open Source Summit Europe in Bilbao, Spain. Throughout the day, we hosted several sessions around the state of open source software security, discussed current initiatives, and looked at what’s next. If you weren’t able to attend, check out our recap.
  • In October, we held a Tech Talk on Securing the Software Supply Chain: An In-Depth Exploration of SLSA. SLSA, or Supply-chain Levels for Software Artifacts, is an OpenSSF project that provides a security framework to improve the integrity and security of packages and infrastructure. Updates:

  • We recently announced the launch of the OpenSSF Security Job Board, which serves the community in two ways: allowing developers to view top-notch jobs in the security space and helping companies hire great people.   • We announced the release of version 1.0 for the Security Insights Specification. This marks the culmination of more than two years of community discussion and development to address common software security difficulties.
  • OpenSSF launched a Malicious Packages Repository, the first open source system for collecting and publishing cross-ecosystem reports of malicious packages.
  • As a critical part of securing every software supply chain, Alpha-Omega announced a grant to the Homebrew project to enable Sigstore attestations and verification of Homebrew packages. When complete, the project will allow organizations to securely verify the provenance of the toolchains on their workstations and build environments. 
  • The OpenSSF Identifying Security Threats Working Group, dedicated to equipping the community with tools and documents for assessing the health of open source projects using metrics and other supporting evidence, gives an update on their current work.
  • We welcomed the new Chief Architect, Dana Wang! A technology leader with a track record of delivering results and making impacts at enterprise scale.

  • Intel dives in on oneDNN Graph API in PyTorch to speed up deep learning inference on x86 CPU.
  • The PyTorch team at Google introduced high MFU training and low latency inference of LLaMA2 accelerated by PyTorch/XLA on Google Cloud TPU v5e.
  • Teams from IBM and Meta demonstrate ultra-low latencies for the 70B model to improve the inference latencies of the Llama 2 family of models using PyTorch native optimizations.
