OSSNA community shines in Seattle & and excitement builds for ONE Summit
Linux and Git creator Linus Torvalds in conversation with Dirk Hohndel from the Verizon Open Source Program Office at Open Source Summit North America.
The open source community energy was high during Open Source Summit North America, Embedded Open Source Summit and Linux Security Summit, which took place at the Seattle Conference Center from April 16 to 18th, as well as co-located events SOSS Community Day, GitOpsCon North America, and Container Plumbing Days, which ran on April 15th. Conference highlights included a fireside chat with Linux and Git creator Linus Torvalds and Verizon’s Dirk Hohndel, incredible keynotes announcing the launch of new projects such as OPEA, and Valkey, updates on technologies and hot topics such as AI, DLT, open governance, cybersecurity, and SBOMs, and special mainstage talks from program sponsors, as well as inspiring leaders including Kelsey Hightower and leading female inventor Lisa Seacat DeLuca. The morning and afternoon sessions and hallway tracks provided a rich experience for all. Adding to the fun was a daily raffle at the end of keynotes with fun prizes such as drones, gaming consoles, VR sets and Lego sets! All told, we had an amazing week and thank everyone who was able to join us, especially our sponsors, speakers, and attendees.

New project announcements
Margo is a new open standard initiative for interoperability at the edge of industrial automation ecosystems. Drawing its name from the Latin word for edge, Margo defines the mechanisms for interoperability between edge applications, edge devices, and edge orchestration software. The open standard promises to bring much needed flexibility, simplicity, and scalability – unlocking barriers to innovation in complex, multi-vendor environments and accelerating digital transformation for organizations of all sizes. To learn more about Margo and how you can participate, please visit www.margo.org.
Launched as a response to a recent license change by Redis Inc, Valkey is an open source alternative to the Redis in-memory, NoSQL data store. Valkey will continue development based on Redis OSS 7.2.4 and will keep the project available for use and distribution under the open source Berkeley Software Distribution (BSD) 3-clause license. The project has already assembled a technical leadership committee of several former Redis contributors, and hundreds more community members have voiced their intent to support Valkey. To learn more about Valkey, please visit the project on GitHub.

LF Research: New surveys + reports
Influence open source strategy by participating in two new surveys
Are you familiar with the impact of standards on the IT industry? LF Research is running its second State of Open Standards study, examining how and why different organizations are involved in open standards adoption and contribution. This year, our aim is to understand why organizations prefer open standards, focusing on the legal and business case for open standards.
Now in its third year, the World of Open Source Global Spotlight Survey continues its exploration into adoption, participation, and challenges of open source. This year's study focuses on the use/consumption of open source software, contribution trends, the value proposition of open source, and its sustainability around the world. Help support research that will inform strategy, policy, and decision-making!
Latest LF Research Reports
LF Research and LF Training & Certification partnered again this year to study trends in the technical talent market. Key findings indicate that despite headlines, only a minority of companies reduced their technical headcount in 2023, and companies are choosing to prioritize upskilling and cross-skilling over hiring to diversify their staff's skills. Discover how organizations are staying competitive through talent retention, acquisition and management by downloading the full report today!
In cloud native research, CNCF partnered with the LF once again to develop its 2023 study, measuring adoption of CNCF projects, understanding motivations for use and contribution, and forecasting new opportunities.
