Exciting announcements from the LF
LY Corporation and Panasonic Automotive Systems (PAS) were welcomed as Linux Foundation Gold Members. LY Corporation is one of Japan's largest technology companies, offering a diverse range of services in search, e-commerce, communications, and advertising. PAS was established in April of 2022 as an operating company responsible for the automotive systems business of the Panasonic Group’s operating company system, and is helping to create comfortable, safe, and secure automobiles.
The Linux Foundation announced the intent to form the Media eXchange Layer Project (MXL). MXL will develop open source software to enable seamless real-time in memory exchange of video, audio, and timed metadata between media functions within modern, software-driven, distributed media production environments.
Valkey 8.1 is now available, marking a major milestone in the advancement of open source in-memory data stores. This latest release empowers enterprises to optimize data management at scale, while reducing operational overhead in finance and engineering resources.
LF Europe: Community Updates
- What Open Source Developers Need to Know About the EU AI Act. The EU AI Act—the world’s first comprehensive AI regulation—entered into force on 1 August 2024. While it acknowledges the importance of open source for innovation and research, its exemptions for open source developers are not without limits.
- This explainer breaks down what the regulation means for open source AI systems and general-purpose models, what obligations apply, and where the community still carries responsibility. Read the full explainer to understand how the EU AI Act impacts open source AI.
- LF Europe Roadshow Kicks Off in Milan: Spotlight on Open Source in Finance. The Linux Foundation Europe Roadshow is a one-day event bringing together policymakers, developers, academics, and industry leaders for an open, grassroots discussion on the future of open source across Europe.
- Our first stop in Milan features a dedicated Impact Track focused on regulated industries—especially the financial sector. As finance increasingly turns to open technologies to drive innovation, strengthen security, and ensure transparency, this track will explore the key opportunities and challenges shaping open source adoption in this space. LF Research: Three new reports + our webinar series continues!
Following last year’s inaugural investigation into open source standards, this year’s State of Open Standards builds on our understanding of how organizations perceive and engage with technical standards, with a focus on the economic value of open standards. The findings challenge existing views on patents and innovation and have significant implications for how organizations approach innovation, standardization, and intellectual property management. - Summer Learning Program: Volunteers are needed to help with our Summer Learning Program, which provides practical skills and mentorship to members of underrepresented communities who are looking to explore technical careers in animation and visual effects. This year’s program runs from June 1- July 31, 2025 with a focus on those that identify as an underrepresented gender in the Visual Effects (VFX) or 3D Animation industry. Learn about the opportunities available for volunteers and sign up by May 5.
- The Academy Software Foundation hosted a panel discussion at the NAB Show in Las Vegas on April 7. The panel featured executives from Netflix, AWS, Foundry, and Sohonet discussing real-world lessons from their experiences developing open source projects, and the benefits of open source to the broader media industry.

- Aether, Rakuten Mobile, and Rakuten Symphony Collaborate to Address Key Energy Savings and Traffic Steering Challenges for Heterogeneous Mobile Networks. The Aether project is teaming with Rakuten Mobile and Rakuten Symphony to launch a series of experiments and trials to explore and validate innovative approaches to address RAN energy saving and traffic steering as part of our SMaRT-5G initiative. By focusing on energy savings and traffic steering capabilities, network operators can improve efficiency, reduce costs, and enhance user experiences while supporting sustainable practices. Project collaborators include Intel Labs, Rimedo Labs, Tietoevry, and VIAVI.
- Aether SD-RAN: Advancing Near-RT RIC in the O-RAN Ecosystem. Learn how Aether SD-RAN aligns with the O-RAN architecture and additional enhancements it offers specifically for Near-RT RIC functionality.

This is the second contest, co-hosted with Unified Patents.
- At KubeCon + CloudNativeCon Europe, CNCF CTO Chris Aniszczyk announced the launch of GitJobs.dev—a new job board built entirely on open source technology and focused on cloud native and Kubernetes roles. Created by the community, for the community, GitJobs.dev connects top talent with organizations building the future of open source infrastructure.

DENT

- The State of FinOps 2025 report reveals that FinOps is as important as ever for delivering value from cloud and, increasingly, from other technology investments — welcoming the era of Cloud+.
- The FinOps Framework has been updated to reflect the present-day practice of FinOps as it evolves to a Cloud+ approach to managing technology spend. The 2025 revisions are driven by the addition of FinOps Scopes as a core element of the Framework, with iterative updates to the definition of FinOps and the language used to describe the Principles, Domains, and Capabilities so they align with the addition of Scopes. LF Broadband
- LF Broadband announced version 2.13 of VOLTHA, which introduces the Voltha Go Controller, along with optimized performance for the open source project for PON broadband access equipment, supporting the principle of multi-vendor, disaggregated, “any broadband access as a service” for the Central Office.
- Arpit Joshipura was interviewed by TFIR to discuss how LF Broadband is driving open innovation in the broadband sector.
LF Decentralized Trust
- LF Decentralized Trust announced five new members and DTCC's Johnna Powell as the newest Governing Board Chair.
- LF Decentralized Trust also released a new ebook detailing activities across the India community.
- CoinDesk, Ledger Insights, The Block and dozens other outlets around the world covered the launch of DTCC's tokenized collateral platform, which is powered by Besu, an LF Decentralized Trust project.
- TechAfrica reports that Sharjah Maritime Academy, in the United Arab Emirates, has introduced micro-credentials using Educhain’s Hyperledger Fabric-powered platform, allowing students to earn verifiable digital certifications for specialized skills and achievements that enhance their employability and academic records.
- The new features of Version 2.0 of CREDBLE, the newest LF Decentralized Trust project, are detailed in this blog post.
- Trust over IP, another LF Decentralized Trust project, released Public Review Draft 01 of its Trust Registry Query Protocol Specification V2.0.
- The Hiero community penned a post requesting feedback on a newly released plug-in and an SDK developed to help integrate key open source identity frameworks and facilitate privacy-preserving credentialing applications.
- A ZDNew story recounts Linux Foundation Executive DIrector Jim Zemlin's talk proposing a "Trust Scorecard" for open source code leveraging decentralized credential and wallet technology from Trust over IP and Open Wallet Foundation. Watch the talk here:

- LFN premier member, Infosys, has contributed two AI projects to LFN and the Linux Foundation: Essedum and Salus. - LF Energy TROLIE announced the official release of the TROLIE Java Client SDK 1.0.0, which enables Java applications to seamlessly interact with TROLIE servers, implementing the Transmission Ratings and Operating Limits Information Exchange (TROLIE) API.
- EPRI has launched a consortium to drive development of AI applications in the power sector, with LF Energy as a founding member.
- LF Energy OpenSynth announced the release of v0.0.6, bringing several powerful new features and performance improvements to the platform, including significant contributions from the community and advancements that will help researchers and practitioners in the energy sector better simulate and analyze energy consumption data.
- Smart Energy International published an article exploring how LF Energy OpenSynth is using synthetic smart meter data to improve energy modeling while protecting privacy.

- The O-RAN Software Community (O-RAN SC), hosted by the Linux Foundation and sponsored by the O-RAN ALLIANCE, has announced its J and K software releases—major milestones that further the adoption of open and intelligent Radio Access Network (RAN) technologies. These updates showcase new capabilities, expanded integrations, and cross-community collaboration with projects like OpenAirInterface (OAI) and Intel FlexRAN™. They also offer enhanced tools for AI/ML development and real-world testing environments for RAN Intelligent Controller (RIC) applications.

UXL Foundation
- We are happy to welcome two new contributing members to the UXL Foundation, Intellias and Renasas
- The UXL Foundation had their AI SIG on March 6, which focused on two presentations, the first from Leping Wang, Beijing Institute of Open Source (BOSC) who discussed the importance of extending the oneDNN project APIs for unified computing platforms. This contribution aims to ensure that oneDNN is the go-library backend for AI frameworks. The second presentation was made by Ashok Bhat from Arm, discussing the hardware features of Arm that aid in Machine Learning (ML), including Bfloat16 support and matrix multiply extensions. He explained how the software team makes these features available to higher-level frameworks like PyTorch and TensorFlow through the oneDNN library. Ashok also presented some interesting performance figures showing oneDNN with PyTorch on Arm processors.
- The UXL Foundation will have a Mini-Summit at the Linux Foundation OSS on June 26 from 1:30-5 PM at the Colorado Convention Center, Denver. Information can be found here.
