New LF project announcement

Welcome Open Model Initiative (OMI)

On August 12th, the Linux Foundation announced the launch of the Open Model Initiative (OMI), a new open source project to foster the development of free to use, open and ethical AI models. Established in response to recent licensing decisions that create barriers for enterprise adoption, OMI is focused on training and developing AI models under irrevocable open licenses without deletion clauses or recurring costs for access. The primary objective of the OMI is to facilitate the development of generative AI models that are true open source, capable, and ethical. For more information about participating in working groups or contributing to the development of open AI models, please visit the OMI Discord and GitHub.

LF Research: Energy Interoperability report + new survey in the field

Reports

Read our latest publication! Open Source and Energy Interoperability: Opportunities for Canadian Energy Stakeholders

In a study prepared for Natural Resources Canada, LF Research investigated how open source promotes interoperability in the context of the Canadian energy grid. This qualitative report explains the main reasons for harmonizing the grid, distills the key blockers of interoperability — communication, data sharing, privacy and security — and describes how the adoption of standards can be improved in order to overcome these obstacles. It also provides some case studies where open source adoption has led to more sustainable, effective, and interoperable energy utility projects.

Surveys

Are you familiar with how your organization is using genAI tools? Participate in our AI research by taking our latest survey!

The use of generative AI is exploding across the business landscape. To understand how organizations are investing in and using generative AI technologies, LF Research, CNCF, and LF AI & Data are conducting a survey that investigates use cases, challenges to adoption, and the role of open-source solutions. We want to hear from you!

DIF

  • DIF to collaborate on DID Method Standardisation

    Image: Unsplash
    • Leaders of the Decentralized Identity Foundation (DIF), Trust Over IP (ToIP) Foundation, W3C Credentials Community Group and W3C Decentralized Identifier Working Group (DID WG) have published a joint letter announcing their intention to collaborate on DID method standardization.
    • The Letter of Intent outlines a plan to form DID method standardization working groups with the initial goal of promoting standardization in the following DID method categories:
      • Self-resolvable / single key methods — such as did:key and did:jwk.
      • Web-based methods — such as did:web and did:tdw.
      • Decentralized methods — such as did:dht.
    • An update published just days after the letter states “We've been blown away by the positive reception to the DID Method standardization LOI. We wanted to thank you for your support, and also provide clarifications and updates.” These include the clarification that ”Our goal is open collaboration so that DID method creators / backers can standardize where they choose.”
    • Intended outputs of the work include shared conformance standards, test vectors, test suites, and other deliverables, with the intent of developing artifacts useful across categories of DID methods (e.g. DID traits or capabilities). This will benefit all DID methods, wherever they are being developed, and the broader DID ecosystem in promoting shared rigor and broad interoperability.
    • The Letter of Intent states “We recognize the importance of Decentralized Identifier (DID) method standardization in ensuring interoperability, security, and user control in decentralized digital identity systems. With the rechartering of the DID WG, the leaders of DID-related work streams believe that now is the right time to extend standardization to DID Methods, with an initial focus on methods that have proven useful to multiple implementers over the past several years. In that spirit, we are proposing that we start the standardization process for a few selected DID Methods, subsequently informing standardization and conformance criteria across categories of DID methods”.
    • The letter will be followed up with a broader outreach to relevant companies and organizations, including DID method creators, DID standards incubators, and DID adopters, as a detailed roadmap and plans are elaborated. In the meantime interested parties are invited to read the LOI and, if you’re interested, register for updates
  • DIF launches hosted Decentralized Web Nodes
    • DIF has launched a Decentralized Web Node (DWN) Community Instance, operated by DIF and powered by Google Cloud.
    • Decentralized Web Nodes (DWNs - also referred to as DWeb Nodes) are personal data stores that eliminate the need for individuals to trust apps to responsibly use and protect their data. Instead, data is owned and controlled by the individual — offering developers a brand new way to create apps that request individuals’ permission to read and access their data, but don’t store it.
    • DWNs are a foundational component of Web5, an open source platform that provides a new, reliable identity and trust layer for the Web to enable decentralized applications and protocols that solve real problems for people. Built on open standards developed by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) and DIF, Web5 consists of three key pillars: Decentralized Identifiers (DIDs), Verifiable Credentials (VCs), and Decentralized Web Nodes.
    • The Managed DWN service or “community node” will allow existing and new Google Cloud customers to more easily build test applications using DWNs. Rather than having to run their own DWN or server infrastructure to store data, developers will be able to leverage a DWN on Google Cloud to build test applications.
    • Developers can use the community DWN node at no cost, including up to 1GB of storage per DID.
    • To access the DIF community node, start here.

eBPF Foundation

  • The eBPF Foundation published an interview with Liz Rice of member Isovalent explaining why Isovalent is part of the foundation, and the benefits it is deriving from eBPF.

ELISA

  • For quite a few years ISO 26262 have supported a component/element-based approach to ISO 26262, SEooC or Safety Element out of Context. This has simplified the argumentation and integration for specific elements into a larger system. However, as we see more and more complex systems being introduced, such as highly automated cars, we foresee that the importance of SEooC concept will grow more important. But the how-to will be developed at the same time. On August 21 at 7 am PT, Hakan Sivencrona, Senior Technical Leader at Volvo Cars, will present the SEooC concept, the usage and possible extensions and supporting argumentation for use of for example SW components in a CI/CD framework. Register here
  • One of the major disadvantages of git’s blame command is that the minimum unit of change it tracks is the line of text. To address this issue, we developed Cregit, a set of tools the permits that traceability of each token of the source code of a git repository. If you missed this ELISA Seminar presented by Daniel German, Professor of Computer Science at the University of Victoria, you can watch the video here.
  • Paul Albertella, Chair of the Open Source Engineering Process Working Group and Consultant at Codethink, shared a retrospective on the ELISA Workshop in Lund, Sweden. Read it here.

The build infrastructure work is starting and this will expand the public testing and CI capabilities of the projects. We welcome your contributions of community infrastructure once the basics are in place. Please join the Working Group meetings monthly to learn more about these and get involved in the decision making for new work packages and initiatives. Sign up to the mailing list to receive an invitation.  Propose what you would like to see, so bring those ideas to the group through the Slack, mailing list or meetings. Join the Slack channels for discussions on the projects, specs and groups, and don’t forget you can find all meeting minutes and proposals on our GitHub repositories.  There is a monthly Open Source Working Group meeting as well as upcoming AI and Safety Critical SIG meetings. Please check the calendar for details and sign up to the appropriate mailing list to receive an invitation.
