Exciting announcements from the LF

We are pleased to welcome the Open Cybersecurity Schema Framework (OCSF) to the Linux Foundation family of projects. This new partnership aims to drive the development and adoption of an open, extensible framework for cybersecurity data schemas. OCSF enables security teams and data producers to work seamlessly within a standardized framework to accelerate threat detection, response, and innovation.

The Jupyter Foundation was launched in November to support Jupyter, an open source project creating software and standards that are widely used by millions for interactive computing, data science, and research. Hosted under LF Charities, the Jupyter Foundation adds a mechanism for organizations to provide sustaining engineering and funding to the mission-critical Project Juptyer in a vendor-neutral way.

Linux Foundation Europe announced its intent to launch the NeoNephos Foundation, which will serve as a neutral entity dedicated to fostering open collaboration and governance to create an overarching “cloud-edge continuum” that is not tied to individual providers, and to strengthen Europe’s digital autonomy. This initiative is based on IPCEI-CIS, so-called Important Project of Common European Interest (IPCEI) around Next Generation Cloud Infrastructures and Services (CIS).

LF Research: Five new reports + a survey in the field!

Since our November newsletter, we’ve published five new research reports! Several research partners, including Futurewei, the TODO Group, LF AI & Data, CNCF, GitHub, researchers from Harvard University, OpenSSF, and the Laboratory for Innovation Science at Harvard, made it all possible. We are beyond grateful for their continued trust and support.

The 2024 State of OSPOs and Open Source Management

The TODO Group and LF Research are excited to announce that The 2024 State of OSPOs and Open Source Initiatives report is now published! 

Now in its 7th year, this report explores the evolving role of Open Source Program Offices (OSPOs), comparing enterprises of different sizes. This report highlights OSPO benefits, challenges, and projected growth, in comparison with data from previous years to understand how these findings are trending. 

 

Shaping the Future of Generative AI

LF AI & Data and CNCF partnered with LF Research to answer the question: what is the role of open source in the evolution and implementation of generative AI (GenAI) technologies? Based on a survey of 316 professionals across diverse industries, this report shows how open source tools are accelerating GenAI adoption while setting a foundation for the future of AI. 

 

2024 Open Source Software Funding Report

Despite having a clear understanding of why organizations contribute to open source software (OSS), the community lacks evidence on how organizations contribute. GitHub and researchers from Harvard University partnered with the Linux Foundation to field a survey measuring enterprise contributions to OSS. The report provides an analysis of this measurement and provides recommended monitoring practices for organizations to implement in order to better capture their contributions. 

 

Decentralization and AI

Today’s digital platforms are centralized platforms that a small handful of big tech companies control. As regulators start to curtail the power of these tech companies, open source innovators are building decentralized infrastructures that preserve individual privacy, autonomy, and digital property rights and increase access to the global commons. In this qualitative report, we spoke with innovators in this space who are disrupting centralized incumbents and creating opportunities for novel platforms and systems. 

 

Census III of Free and Open Source Software: Application Libraries

What are the most commonly used free and open source software (FOSS) packages? LF Research partnered with OpenSSF and the Laboratory for Innovation Science at Harvard to study the most common packages used at the application library level. With data from Software Composition Analysis partners FOSSA, Snyk, Sonatype, and BlackDuck, the investigators captured detailed results of FOSS usage and key patterns of this usage that will help enhance the security of these packages, including changes since the previous Census II report.

The 2024 CNCF Survey is in the field!

Every year, the CNCF and LF Research partner on a survey that gathers data from the community to investigate the challenges, opportunities, and trends in the cloud native ecosystem. We invite you to join #TeamCloudNative and take this year’s survey!

 

LF Europe: Community updates

  • Gabriele Columbro, General Manager of Linux Foundation Europe, will be delivering a keynote at the Open Source Policy Summit in Brussels. His talk will focus on how open source is powering Europe's digital innovation and fostering global collaboration, particularly in key areas like cybersecurity and AI. Check out the agenda.

Aether

  • IOS-MCN - Aether User Video
  • Learn how the India Open Source for Mobile Communication Network (IOS-MCN) is using Aether SD-Core. IOS-MCN is a project funded by the government of India who are building an open source software platform for 5G and beyond to democratize the Indian telecom industry. They are building on SD-Core some key capabilities with target release dates in 2025, including:
    • voice calling support (IMS)
    • management layer (EMS)
    • scaling/testing
  • Initial Observations on SMaRT-5G Project Energy Efficiency Measurements. Check out an article in RCR Wireless News by Sarat Puthenpura, Chief Architect, Aether, in which he shares some of the exciting research findings to date from the Aether SMaRT-5G project. SMaRT-5G is focused on exploring, demonstrating and validating innovative energy measurements and modeling for 5G mobile networks. 

    The project is funded by a $2M grant from the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) and activity is taking place  in collaboration with Rutgers University’s WINLAB and Cognizant. Read the article.

  • INTERESTED IN LEARNING MORE? 

Alliance for OpenUSD (AOUSD)

  • AOUSD is excited to announce new Steering Committee rotating members, SideFX Software and Trimble Inc., along with new members Cadence, Foxconn, and Pickford AI. We’ve also established new liaison relationships, released an updated version of OpenUSD, and made significant progress in our AOUSD working groups. Read the announcement. 
  • AOUSD held its Inaugural Member Summit on November 15 at the Autodesk Gallery in San Francisco. The hybrid event, which was open to Steering, General, and Contributor members, demonstrated strong and enthusiastic engagement and traction around OpenUSD. 

Automotive Grade Linux (AGL)

  • AGL announced a new Open Source Program Office Expert Group (OSPO EG) led by Toyota. The new OSPO EG will enable automakers and suppliers to share best practices, making it easier for engineers across the industry to contribute to open source software.   • Save the Date: The next AGL All Members Meeting will be on February 26-27, 2025 in Tokyo. Submit to speak by January 12, 2025.

DENT

  • DENT is collaborating with Algebra University to host the Linux Foundation's first open source hackathon in Croatia. On December 14, university students and professionals will gather in Zagreb to tackle network configuration and management challenges.
  • Next on the event calendar, DENT will exhibit at NRF Big Show 2025 in New York City from January 12–14.

  • Announcing DIF’s 2024 Hackathon Winners: The DIF 2024 Hackathon showcased incredible talent and innovation. Participants tackled real-world challenges across Verifiable AI, Proof of Personhood, Education & Workforce, Privacy-Promoting Credentials using Zero-Knowledge Proofs, Decentralized Storage, and Frictionless Travel.   • Join the DIDComm Interopathon: DIF is thrilled to invite organizations, developers, and community members to participate in an event centered around fostering interoperability within the DIDComm ecosystem. Read more or sign up for the Interopathon today.
  • The Rise of DIDComm and its impact on Key Industries preparing for eIDAS: Learn about DIDComm, its relationship with eIDAS, and how it stands to revolutionize five key industries. Read more.
  • DIDComm Formal Verification and Internet Identity Workshop Report Out: 
    • DIDComm is a cornerstone protocol in Self-Sovereign Identity (SSI), enabling private, authenticated messaging between entities using Decentralized Identifiers (DIDs). In a breakthrough study, researchers have completed the first formal security analysis of DIDComm, marking a crucial milestone in verifying the protocol's security promises. The paper, "What Did Come Out of It? Analysis and Improvements of DIDComm Messaging", by Christian Badertscher, Fabio Banfi, and Jesús Díaz Vico not only validates DIDComm's core security model but also introduced significant improvements.     • DIF’s team, leaders, and community drove insightful conversations at the future of identity at the 39th Internet Identity Workshop. Topics included: Verifiable AI, DIF’s DID Method Standardization effort, DIF Labs, and more. Read more. 

eBPF Foundation

Enabling Linux in Safety Applications (ELISA) Project

  • The next ELISA Workshop will be hosted by NASA at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland, on Dec 10-12! Speakers inlcude representatives from ELISA Project member companies including Boeing, Red Hat, Bosch as well as NASA, CesiumAstro, TelePIX, the Linux Foundation, Automotive Grade Linux, Dronecode Foundation and more. Register for this free event.
    • Attendees will learn more about the new Space Grade Linux Special Interest Group that addresses the challenges of space, which often includes a long lifespan for robotic or human-based missions. From development to deployment there are multiple considerations that need to be considered. This new SIG is the initial step towards creating an ecosystem of supported platforms and a collaborative community.
    • Hosted under the ELISA Project, the Space Grade Linux SIG is currently seeking feedback about Linux in Space in a survey and recruiting more members. Provide your feedback.  

FinOps Foundation

  • We're excited to announce that FOCUS 1.1 is now available. This version adds new Columns that deepen support for billing data generated by cloud service providers, giving Practitioners the ability to do more granular, multi-vendor analysis.

  • Shaping the Future of Generative AI
    • LF AI & Data and CNCF teamed up with LF Research to explore the role of open source in advancing generative AI (GenAI) technologies. Drawing insights from 316 professionals across industries, the report reveals how open source tools are driving GenAI adoption and shaping the future of AI.
    • Highlights include: 84% of organizations report moderate to high GenAI adoption, with 41% of that infrastructure based on open source. Top use cases include process automation, content creation, and code generation. Notably, 82% agree open source AI is essential for a positive AI future. View the report to learn more!
  • Projects
    • LF AI & Data welcomed the Open Model Initiative (OMI) as its latest Sandbox project. The OMI is a community-driven initiative dedicated to the advancement and broad adoption of openly licensed, high-quality AI models that inspire innovation, are free to use, and address the needs for open-source AI solutions effectively.     • LF AI & Data announced vLLM, as its latest incubation project. vLLM is a high-throughput, memory-efficient inference and serving engine for Large Language Models (LLMs). Learn more.

LF Broadband 

  • LF Broadband hosted a webinar on 3 December on “The Future of Open Broadband Access”. The webinar featured presentations from telecommunications operators like Deutsche Telekom and Turk Telekom, as well as industry suppliers like Netsia and Radisys. LF Decentralized Trust

  • As reported here, Chainlink is working with Microsoft and Banco Inter on new transaction settlement solutions as part of the phase-two development for Drex, the Brazilian CBDC built using Besu, an LF Decentralized Trust project.
  • Funding news from software start-up OpenOrigins highlights its work combating fake media by enabling newsroom to authenticate digital content on a public and immutable blockchain based on Besu.
  • The potential for cross-border payments among Mercosur countries leveraging an already established customs data network powered by Hyperledger Fabric, an LF Decentralized Trust project, was a topic of discussion at Argentina Fintech Forum.
  • The Notarial College of Brazil - Federal Council reported that 8,000 thousand Advance Directives have been registered in notary offices in Brazil using Hyperledger Fabric-based Notarchain.
  • Decentralized Trust CTO Hart Montgomery provided his expertise during a TradeTalks segment on the implications of Quantum Computing on Nasaq.
  • A Forbes column that delves into what Byzantine Fault Tolerance is and why it matters highlights Hyperledger Fabric's use of the consensus mechanisms to enhance the resilience and security of enterprise blockchain networks.
  • This blog post explains how to add a privacy layer to permissioned Besu networks using Hyperledger Bevel, another LF Decentralized Trust project.

  • LF Edge published a webinar on the future of industrial automation with insights from experts in OT, IT, IIoT, and edge computing. LF Energy

  • The LF Energy TROLIE project published its version 1.0.0 specification for exchange of power system ratings and limits data. The specification was also covered in technical detail in a webinar (available on demand) presented by Christopher Atkins of MISO and Tory McKeag of GE Vernova.
  • LF Energy announced that a new Rust implementation of OpenADR 3.0 is now part of the LF Energy OpenLEADR project. OpenADR 3.0 is the latest version of the OpenADR standard that was created in 2009. According to the OpenADR Alliance, it is “designed to complement older versions of the standard”, such as OpenADR 2.0b, which is widely used within the energy industry.
  • LF Energy Power Grid Model v1.10 is now available, adding support for columnar data and generic branch component type. PGM is a high-performance Python/C++ library for steady-state distribution power system analysis.
  • The Power Grid Model community will host a webinar on January 20, covering how to advance grid calculations through collaborative open source innovation.

LF Networking

  • LF Networking will host Open Networking & Edge Summit 2025 in London on March 31, alongside KubeCon + CloudNatitveCon Europe  given the significant evolution the industry is undergoing as it moves towards cloud native infrastructure. Attendees are invited to extend the experience and also attend Cloud Native Telco Day, co-located with KubeCon + CloudNatitveCon Europe on April 1. Learn more about the events here.

To address this gap, Making Our Strong Community Stronger (MSCS) hosted the Native Americans in Tech webinar on November 13. Moderated by Dean Dauphinais of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians, the session featured Native American tech leaders Jeanne Glass (VirtualZ Computing), Phil Sutherin (Broadcom), and Jeremy Hamilton (BMC Software).   • Blog: Open Mainframe Project wins big in Las Vegas.
    • In October, the Open Mainframe Project community gathered in Las Vegas for IBM TechXchange. This year, more than 5,000 attendees embarked on over 40,000 hours of learning at the conference. In fact, our ambassadors and project leads came together to present content as part of Community Day on Monday, October 21. In total,  1,056 attendees across 19 unique sessions. OpenHPC

OpenPOWER Foundation

  • OPF is excited to announce the latest release of the PowerVM on Power Architecture Platform Requirements document (PAPR). The PAPR document outlines the PowerVM Hypervisor and firmware interfaces used by OS kernels, making it easier for the community at large to review patches using these interfaces and support Linux on Power.
  • For the kernel developers out there interested in or supporting Linux on Power, check it out! This newly updated version we published also includes all of the PowerVM Hypervisor interfaces used to implement KVM on PowerVM.

OpenSSF

O-RAN Software Community (SC) 

  • The O-RAN Software Community (SC) gathered in Montreal for a Face-to-Face event on October 30-31, 2024, to showcase cutting-edge demos driving open RAN forward. From multi-architecture support to AI-powered networks and energy-efficient solutions, the sessions offered a glimpse into the future of telecommunications. Stay tuned for the upcoming “K” release and more innovative tools shaping the industry. Read more here. 
  • The ETSI Software and Standards for Smart Networks and Services Conference & Hackfests (SNS4SNS) event brought together telecom and open source leaders on November 12-14, 2024, in Sophia Antipolis, France. The O-RAN Software Community (SC) presented on “O-RAN and Open Source: The Problem of Copyright,” highlighting the unique challenges of integrating open source software with telecom standards. This session raised awareness among other communities and sparked valuable discussions about collaborative solutions. Read more here. 

Overture Maps Foundation

  • Overture 2024-11-13.0 is now available. Addresses added 66 new datasets, plus postal_city column to support address formatting.Transportation theme added 2.6M new connectors for crosswalks. Base and Buildings added new detailed features and classifications. See the release notes here.
  • Join the panel discussion, 'A Shared Vision for SDI Futures,' featuring Overture’s Executive Director Marc Prioleau and cross-sector leaders in geospatial. They’ll explore how future Spatial Data Infrastructure can meet evolving user expectations while leveraging cutting-edge technologies like AI. Learn more here.
  • At the recent World Health Organization GIS Knowledge Series: Open Data for Global Health webinar, Executive Director Marc Prioleau of Overture joined an incredible panel featuring Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team,WorldPop, and United Nations OCHA.   • Euro P4 Wrap-up Blog: The annual EuroP4 is the official European workshop of the P4 Language Consortium. Ultra Ethernet Consortium

  • From November 17-22, UEC participated in Supercomputing 2024 (SC24) in Atlanta, showcasing our contributions to high-performance networking and communications.

The Unified Acceleration Foundation (UXL Foundation)

  • The first oneAPI Dev Summit hosted by the UXL Foundation was very well received. There was fantastic insight from Steering members including Arm, Broadcom, Fujitsu, GE Healthcare, Google Cloud, Imagination Technologies, Intel, Qualcomm, and Samsung, plus excellent talks from the broader UXL Foundation community. Alliance partner Autoware Foundation led a panel discussing how open standards can bring the next level of innovation to the automotive industry.  Recordings can be viewed here. 
  • The UXL Foundtion held a breakfast meetup at SC ‘24 on November 18 at the Westin Peachtree Plaza, Atlanta, Georgia, in conjunction with SC’24. The agenda included a breakfast reception, UXL Foundation overview, insights from our members, and an open member Q&A.

  • The inaugural UXL Foundation Member Meeting is being held on December 3rd, 2024. The event provides a forum for the UXL Foundation membership to gather and hear about Working Group and SIG updates, participate in a member retrospective session, and learn about the Foundation’s plans for 2025.

Zephyr Project

  • Meet Zephyr Project at FOSDEM 2025. This year, the Zephyr Project is thrilled to announce something extra special – we will have a table at FOSDEM! For years, our community members have actively participated in talks and sessions, but this marks the first time we will have a dedicated space to meet attendees, showcase Zephyr RTOS, and deepen our community engagement.   • Zephyr RTOS 4.0: Highlights from the New Release. The Zephyr community has been hard at work, and the latest release is here! Explore the highlights of Zephyr RTOS 4.0 with Benjamin Cabé, Developer Advocate for the project. Check out his release video to dive into the exciting new features introduced just four months after the LTS release in July.
  • Have you read our recap blogs from Open Source Summit Europe in Vienna and Open Source Summit Japan in Tokyo? The Open Source Summit Europe, held from September 16-19, 2024, in Vienna, Austria, attracted 1,855 attendees from 1,013 organizations worldwide, with strong representation from the USA, Germany, and Austria. The event featured diverse roles, including systems and embedded developers, application developers, and executives.   • At the Open Source Summit Japan, held on October 28-29, 2024, in Tokyo, 878 in-person attendees from 37 countries - led by the USA, India, and Japan - came together to explore cutting-edge open source developments.
