In this edition, we're excited to share updates on the launch of the OpenWallet Foundation, a new survey and reports from LF Research on Web3 Sustainability and Enterprise Open Source, and great deals on LF Training & Certification courses. OpenWallet Foundation Launches

  • Linux Foundation Europe has announced the official launch of the OpenWallet Foundation (OWF), a new collaborative open source initiative developing software to support interoperability for a wide range of digital wallet use cases. The inaugural premier members sponsoring the OWF include Accenture, Deutsche Telekom / T-Systems, Gen, Futurewei, and Visa, with several general members also sponsoring the Foundation. More than 20 leading nonprofits, academic, and government entities have joined the Foundation. The OWF aims to provide a core open source software engine that other organizations and companies can leverage to develop their own digital wallets. The OWF underscores the importance of an open foundation to support a plurality of digital wallets to ensure consistency, interoperability, and portability while protecting consumer privacy.
  • In case you missed it, earlier on February 23rd, the OWF hosted an interactive webinar discussing the importance of interoperable, secure, and privacy-protecting digital wallets (video). The panel, which brought together experts from multiple sectors, discussed the growing importance of digital wallets and the OWF's role in driving the development of digital wallet infrastructure.

Participate in the Tech Talent Survey 

LF Research is exploring the state of business hiring trends with the 2023 Tech Talent Survey. 

The 2023 Tech Talent Survey seeks to provide insights on hiring trends and skills in demand, especially in the uncertain job market of the open source technology sector. New Research on Web3 Sustainability, Open Source Fragmentation, and Improving Enterprise Open Source Development

A new report from Linux Foundation Research and Intel, Web3 and Sustainability: How We Can Reduce the Climate Impact of Blockchains; How Blockchains Can Help Reduce Our Own, is now available. The report highlights the importance of open source solutions, sustainability, standards, regulations, diversity, and inclusion for building sustainable blockchain infrastructure. 

 

Enabling Global Collaboration: How Open Source Leaders Are Confronting the Challenges of Fragmentation delves into the issue of fragmentation in the open source community, analyzing it across three areas: solution development, contributor integration, and community governance. The report identifies both positive and negative effects of fragmentation and provides actionable insights for managing it. Linux Foundation project news and updates

Academy Software Foundation

  • As noted in this blog by Hilary Carter, Many of the studios behind this year's top Oscar contenders, including "Avatar," "Pinocchio," and "Top Gun: Maverick," use open source software. The Academy Software Foundation provides a platform for open source developers in the media and entertainment industry to collaborate and create cutting-edge technologies for image creation, visual effects, animation, and sound. 
  • Autodesk and DNEG contribute code to the Open Review Initiative, an umbrella project at the Academy Software Foundation working to build a unified open source toolset for playback, review, and approval of motion pictures and related professional media. Autodesk contributed Open RV, a new open source version of its media review and playback software, and DNEG contributed xSTUDIO, its playback and review application. 
  • HP and Framestore joined the Academy Software Foundation as new members.

Automotive Grade Linux

  • Registration is open for the bi-annual Automotive Grade Linux (AGL) All Member Meeting on March 8-9 in Berlin, Germany. The event brings together the automotive and tech industries to learn about the latest open source developments. 
  • Stop by the AGL booth at Embedded World in Nuremberg, Germany, on March 14-16 to check out AGL infotainment and instrument cluster demos and open source automotive demos by AWS, Igalia, and AVL.

Call for Code

  • David Clark Cause, IBM, the United Nations Human Rights, and the Linux Foundation have launched the 2023 Call for Code Global Challenge. This year's program challenges global developers, students, and startups to develop AI-powered technology projects that address sustainability issues such as reducing pollution, improving resource management, and protecting biodiversity. The program will have multiple rounds throughout the year, each with its own prizes and funding of up to $1.4 million.

FinOps Foundation

LF Networking

  • LF Networking is a leader in open source networking software and has partnerships with top telecommunications companies, networking providers, and governments and promotes easy and quick deployment and interoperability across the industry. Our 2022 Year in Review includes perspectives from LFN leaders on what to expect in the open source networking industry in 2023 and beyond.
  • The LF Networking Mini ONE Summit is happening on May 10-12, 2023, at the Open Source Summit in Vancouver. This event will feature talks from industry experts about developing and operating open source networking products. To attend, add the Mini ONE Summit to your Open Source Summit North America registration. Note that pre-registration is required.
  • Check out the new “LFN Community Voices” video series, with interviews of real developers working across the open source networking community of projects. Read the blog post, and check out the YouTube playlist. 
  • LFN just wrapped up the first LFN Developer & Testing Forum of 2023. Over 300 developers gathered for four days of virtual, global collaboration across LFN and adjacent community projects. Videos and session content are available online. 
  • The Anuket Project is running a short survey to learn how the community uses Anuket. Please take a few moments to complete this survey and help the Project learn about its use in the wild.

openIDL

  • openIDL is an insurance-specific Open Governance Network that addresses common industry-wide challenges through collaboration between stakeholders and competitors in a consortium. Developed by the American Association of Insurance Services and moved to the Linux Foundation, openIDL harmonizes industry data, provides data privacy, and implements standardization through data formatting, tokenization, and interoperability standards. The network uses Hyperledger Fabric and other technologies to manage data, create transactions, and conduct secure and efficient data calls. openIDL represents a huge milestone for the insurance industry in solving industry-wide challenges collaboratively and securely.

Open3D Foundation and Open Metaverse Foundation

  • The O3DE community will attend the Game Developers Conference from March 20-24 in San Francisco. The conference is an opportunity for developers to learn about the latest advances in game development. There will be several events related to open source technologies, including a talk by Royal O'Brien about how open source can help 3D content creators. There will also be roundtable discussions on the current state of open source in the game industry and a panel discussion about the O3DE Mobile Renderer and its impact.
  • Attend the Open Metaverse Summit in Vancouver from May 10-12 to learn about the power of open source in the Metaverse. The summit is part of the Open Source Summit and features leading developers and innovators in the industry. Gain insights into open source technologies and understand why open collaboration is important for the open Metaverse. Connect with the open Metaverse community and register for the event through the Open Source Summit.
  • In a panel discussion, Open 3D Foundation's Executive Director hosts a panel discussion with industry leaders, exploring the benefits of open source collaboration in mobile graphics and gaming development. The video covers the latest trends and standards, the Open 3D Engine community, the Mobile Device Working Group, and how to get involved. Hear from Amazon Web Services, Carbonated, Heroic Labs, Huawei, Imagination Technologies, and OPPO experts.
  • In a podcast episode of Tales from the 3rd Dimension, Marc Petit from Epic Games and Royal O'Brien from the Open 3D Foundation discuss the significance of interoperability for game development and the Metaverse. They touch on real-time ray tracing, AI and ML advancements, and open source technology. Learn more about their insights on the future of 3D technology. 
  • The Open Metaverse Foundation has published its playbook on Discord and is now in Phase 2, identifying required features. To join in building the open Metaverse, attend their weekly community meetings on Tuesdays at 1 PM EST on Discord. You can join the Focus Interest Group meetings if you have a specific area of interest.

OpenJS Foundation

  • Node.js Security Progress Report: In our monthly progress report, the team handled more reports and more fixes than ever and started work on ecosystem issues, which will improve Node.js security in 2023.
  • OpenJS World 2023: Registration is open for OpenJS World 2023. The event is co-located with Open Source Summit North America. Before the event, we will also host a collaborator summit on May 9, 2023. More details to come!

OpenSSF

  • Submit to the call for proposals for OpenSSF Day at Open Source Summit North America on May 10, 2022. Join the open source community in discussing challenges and solutions for securing the OSS supply chain. 
  • Join Us at the First OSS Security Meetup in Tokyo, Japan: Join us on February 28 in Tokyo for the first-ever OSS Security Meetup in Japan, hosted by OpenSSF Members. Connect with like-minded individuals and tackle OSS security challenges together. 
  • Join Us at the First OSS Security Meetup in Hong Kong: Mark your calendars for the first-ever OpenSSF Meetup in Hong Kong on March 1! Join us for a keynote from Brian Behlendorf, a leading open source software movement figure. 
  • Announcing the 1.0 Release of sigstore-python: OpenSSF Project Sigstore has released a stable version of the sigstore-python client, including a CLI and a Python API. This provides the community with a usable, reference-quality Sigstore client implementation.
  • Independent Security Audit Impact Report: OpenSSF and Google partnered with OSTIF to sponsor security audits for critical projects, and the Independent Security Audit Impact Report is now available. Learn more about the impact of these audits and associated work in improving project security."
  • Spotlight on OpenSSF Board Members: Join us as we highlight Tracy Ragan, CEO of DeployHub, and Vincent Danen, Vice President of Product Security at Red Hat. Learn about their expertise in supply chain management, DevOps practices, and software security in open source communities.
  • 10 Sessions Not to be Missed from CloudNativeSecurityCon: OpenSSF attended CloudNativeSecurityCon in Seattle, WA, hosted by CNCF. The event united app developers and security experts to discuss modern security approaches and present solutions to security challenges. The full playlist from the conference is now available as well.
  • Talking OSS Security in Europe: We discussed OSS security at multiple events this month, including the EU Open Source Policy Summit in Brussels, FOSDEM, and the State of OpenCon in London. 
  • Feedback on the Cyber Resilience Act (CRA): OpenSSF weighs in on the proposed EU Cyber Resilience Act (CRA), promoting policies that increase security and resilience. 
  • OpenSSF’s Year in Review: Our community is making strides in addressing global software security challenges through 30+ active software projects and technical initiatives. Read about our 2022 activities and highlights in our first annual report.

PyTorch Foundation

  • Ask the Engineers Live Q&A Series Continues: Hear from engineers directly on PyTorch 2.0! This month we covered topics like TorchInductor, data loading, and capturing maximum batch size.
  • Deprecation of CUDA 11.6 and Python 3.7 Support: For the upcoming PyTorch 2.0 feature release, we will target CUDA 11.7 as the stable version and CUDA 11.8 as the experimental version of CUDA and Python >=3.8, <=3.11.
  • PyTorch Foundation Mini Summit: Join us at Open Source Summit North America in Vancouver, Canada, to connect with fellow PyTorch community members. Poster sessions, social networking opportunities, and more will be planned.
