Exciting announcements from the LF
The OpenInfrastructure Foundation (OpenInfra) has signaled its intent to join as a member foundation of the Linux Foundation, with unanimous approval from the boards of both organizations. Together, the Linux Foundation and the OpenInfra Foundation will unite their growing, vibrant, global ecosystems to empower users and developers with trusted open source solutions. The Linux Foundation announced the election of two representatives to its Board of Directors. Takehisa Katayama from Renesas has been reelected to represent Gold Members and Emilio Salvador from GitLab has been elected to represent Silver Members of the Linux Foundation. The Coalition for Smarter Buildings (C4SB) has announced their intent to form the C4SB Foundation under the Linux Foundation. The C4SB Foundation will work to support technical projects that develop open standards and open source software for building automation, real estate applications and the lifecycle of buildings. LF Research published two new reports this month!
Each of these two new reports investigate the readiness of the open source community to comply with the EU Cyber Resilience Act (CRA).
Unaware and Uncertain: The Stark Realities of Cyber Resilience Act Readiness in Open Source
The first report, Unaware and Uncertain: The Stark Realities of Cyber Resilience Act Readiness in Open Source, highlights significant knowledge gaps in the open source ecosystem when it comes to the CRA. Survey data reveals that most respondents are unfamiliar with the CRA, uncertain about compliance deadlines, and unaware of non-compliance penalties. The report includes various recommendations for manufacturers and stewards to prepare themselves for the new regulation.
Pathways to Cybersecurity Best Practices in Open Source
The second report, Pathways to Cybersecurity Best Practices in Open Source, examines how the CRA impacts open source software, including new cybersecurity obligations and the role of manufacturers and stewards. The analysis highlights the security practices of three projects—CIP, Yocto Project, and Zephyr—and notes challenges in compliance, and recommends investing in various priority areas to maintain sustainable OSS development.

- CIP at FOSDEM 2025: Enhancing Secure System Updates:
- At FOSDEM 2025, Jan Kiszka, CIP Kernel Workgroup Chair and Principal Key Expert at Siemens AG, presented "Generating immutable, A/B updatable, securely booting Debian Images" (session details).
- The talk introduced isar-cip-core (project details), an integration layer developed by CIP to enhance Debian for embedded industrial use. It covered key features, upcoming plans, and efforts to achieve bit-identical reproducibility and integrate custom packages into Debian.

- Cryptographic Pseudonyms: A Technical Deep Dive: Following IETF/IRTF's adoption of BBS Blind Signatures and BBS per-Verifier Linkability specifications, Greg Bernstein, Dave Longley, Manu Sporny, and Kim Hamilton Duffy have published a comprehensive exploration of the evolution of cryptographic pseudonyms and their privacy features. The article examines how BBS signatures provide protections against both third-party and first-party credential fraud. Learn more.
- DIF Labs Showcases Innovative Projects: The DIF Labs Show and Tell event featured three groundbreaking projects from the Beta Cohort: Ordinals Plus (implementing verifiable credentials on Bitcoin using Ordinal inscriptions), Linked Claims (combining attestations to build progressive trust), and VerAnon (a protocol for anonymous personhood verification using zero-knowledge proofs). Enabling Linux in Safety Applications (ELISA) Project
- The ELISA Project welcomes Honda and KernelCI to its ecosystem to strengthen the kernel and drive innovation in functional safety in automotives. Read the news release.
- The Space Grade Linux Special Interest Group addresses the challenges of space, which often includes a long lifespan for robotic or human-based missions. From development to deployment there are multiple considerations that need to be considered. Hosted under the ELISA Project, the new SIG is a step towards creating an ecosystem of supported platforms and a collaborative community. Kate Stewart, Vice President of Dependable Embedded Systems at the Linux Foundation, and Ramon Roche, General Manager of Dronecode Foundation, presented survey results in the last ELISA Workshop. - Blog: GenevaERS updates. GenevaERS efficiently processes large volumes of data while producing multiple outputs. The latest updates include a proof of concept (POC) for an inter-language framework, demonstrating seamless integration between Java and mainframe languages like Assembler, COBOL, and C++. Performance improvements include better runtime efficiency, multi-threading, and enhanced metadata storage. - Version 1.0.1 of the Arazzo Specification has been released, which provides important clarifications without altering core functionality, ensuring greater clarity, improved examples for implementers, and corrections of minor inaccuracies.
- If you haven’t heard about Arazzo, Frank Kilcommins from SmartBear has provided a deep dive that explains the specification in more detail.
- Frank has also been talking about how Arazzo supports AI agents, by providing API-based workflow descriptions that AI agents can act on.
- Erik Wilde has been nominated as an OpenAPI Community Hero. He shares his thoughts on the future of the OpenAPI Initiative in his hero profile.
