Exciting announcements from the LF
Welcome OpenSearch Software Foundation
On September 16th, the Linux Foundation announced the launch of the OpenSearch Software Foundation, a community-driven initiative that will support OpenSearch and its search software, which is used by developers around the world to build search, analytics, observability, and vector database applications. Established in 2021 and previously hosted by Amazon Web Services (AWS), OpenSearch has recorded more than 700 million software downloads and participation from thousands of contributors and more than 200 project maintainers. The OpenSearch Software Foundation is dedicated to driving the growth and development of OpenSearch and its open source search and analytics tools. Unified Patents extends benefits to LF and CNCF members
To help address an uptick in patent aggression from Non-Practicing Entities (NPEs) who target both open and closed source solutions, we’re excited to announce that Unified Patents has extended benefits to Linux Foundation and CNCF members. These benefits are designed to help protect Members’ use and distribution of open source software from patent aggression by non-practicing entities (NPEs). Welcome LF Decentralized Trust
From the main stage at Open Source Summit Europe, Daniela Barbosa announced the launch of Linux Foundation Decentralized Trust (LF Decentralized Trust), a new umbrella organization that fosters collaboration and innovation across a growing ecosystem of blockchain, ledger, identity, interoperability, cryptographic, and related technologies. LF Decentralized Trust will provide a neutral home for collaborative development of technologies powering the transition to a digital-first economy. It launched with 100+ founding members and 17 projects, including the complete Hyperledger landscape, Trust Over IP community, and additional technology and ecosystems. Founding members include those coming over from Hyperledger Foundation and Trust Over IP as well as 13 that joined LF Decentralized Trust directly. Learn more about LF Decentralized Trust.
Open Source Mobile Packet Core, free5GC, now under the LF
Announced from the keynote stage at Open Source Summit EU, the world's Leading Open Source Mobile Packet Core, free5GC, has moved under the Linux Foundation. The project, focused on implementing 5G core into mobile networks with the goal of implementing the 5G core network (5GC) defined in 3GPP Release 15 (R15), will offer additional open source alternatives across 5G deployments.
Intent to form–Developer Relations Foundation
The Linux Foundation also announced in Vienna, its intent to form the Developer Relations Foundation (DRF), a new community-driven project with the mission to elevate the professional practice of developer relations (DevRel) and increase awareness of its role as a crucial driver of developer success, technology adoption, and business value. The DRF aims to provide the environment, methodologies, and frameworks needed to support and unify best practices, common language, and metrics within the DevRel community. Our 2024 report on the state of open source in Europe is out!
For the past three years, LF Research has conducted a study on the adoption, opportunities, and perceptions of open source across Europe. This year's report identifies key sectors to channel investment, the opportunity for the public sector to embrace open source for digital public goods, and how regulations are interacting with and responding to more widespread open source adoption and knowledge. CAMARA
- Several CAMARA members (including Ericsson, DT, AT&T, Orange, Telefonica, T-Mobile, Verizon and Vodafone, as well as other global telecoms) recently announced a new venture to combine and sell network CAMERA-based APIs on a global scale to spur innovation in digital services. - CAMARA's first major release is now available! Announced from the keynote stage during Open Source Summit EU in Vienna, Austria, the release includes 23 quality APIs addressing popular functions such as SIM Swap, Number Verification, Edge Discovery, and Quality on Demand, among others.

- The DAOS Foundation is organizing the 8th annual DAOS User Group (DUG’24) at the SC24 conference in Atlanta (GA).

- DUG’24 is an in-person event and will be hosted by HPE. It will take place on November 18th in the Omni Hotel Atlanta (GA), from 9am to 12pm.

- The DAOS User Group is targeted towards storage customers and partners who are a part of the DAOS community or follow DAOS development. The agenda includes updates from the DAOS foundation, various partners presenting their offerings and development activities, as well as end customers sharing their DAOS experiences.

- DAOS BoF at SC’24: Save the Date! | November 20, 2024
- Don’t miss the DAOS BOF at SC’24! DAOS is an open-source scale-out object store that delivers extremely high performance to the most data-intensive HPC and AI workloads. With the creation of the DAOS Foundation in 2023 and the support of PMem-less DAOS servers, DAOS has seen increasing community contributions and growing adoption in both on-prem and cloud environments.
- This BoF brings together the DAOS community to share experiences and to brainstorm on future enhancements of DAOS. It targets application programmers and HPC/AI middleware developers wanting to optimize the I/O path of their applications, administrators of DAOS storage systems, and DAOS software developers alike. - DIF launched two new work items within our Identifiers & Discovery Working Group, aimed at improving the functionality and security of Decentralized Identifiers (DIDs).
- DID Traits focuses on helping implementers choose the most appropriate DID method for their specific use cases.
- Trust DID Web introduces the did:tdw method specification as an enhancement to the existing did:web method.
- DIF is honored to announce its contribution to a groundbreaking paper on "Personhood Credentials" (PHCs), authored by researchers from prestigious institutions including OpenAI, Harvard, and MIT. This collaboration underscores the critical importance of new approaches in addressing online human-AI distinction challenges.
eBPF Foundation
- The eBPF Foundation awarded $250,000 in grant funding to five universities to carry out academic research projects to advance eBPF’s open source technology by improving scalability, static analysis, verifier, virtual memory, and more.
Enabling Linux in Safety Applications (ELISA) Project
- This month, the ELISA Project welcomes two new members: Lynx Software Technologies and Hamburg University of Technology – Institute of Aircraft Systems Engineering. LF Decentralized Trust

- This joint press release announces Hedera as a premier member of LF Decentralized Trust, joining Accenture, DTCC and Hitachi, all long-standing Hyperledger premier members, at the highest level of community investment and foundation leadership.
- LF Decentralized Trust is the home for a growing ecosystem of blockchain, ledger, identity, interoperability, cryptographic, and related technologies. These include two new projects:
- Hiero - A robust decentralized ledger platform leveraging a unique consensus mechanism. A contribution from Hedera, Hiero encompasses all the core network software needed to deploy and run a full public network and interact with that network.
- Lockness - An ecosystem for key management and digital signature protocols, including multi-party computation and threshold cryptography, contributed by Dfns.
- Version 3.0 of Hyperledger Fabric, now an LF Decentralized Trust project, is now available, delivering a powerful new consensus option, Byzantine Fault Tolerant (BFT) ordering service, which increases the resilience and reliability of Hyperledger Fabric networks.
LF Edge
- LF Edge hosted a half-day mini summit, “LF Edge Day” co-located with Open Source Summit EU in Vienna on September 19. Topics included solving network challenges with EVE, enhancing AI-based services with Open Horizon in agriculture, and large-scale industrial edge deployments with EdgeX Foundry. Stay tuned for video recordings of the sessions on the LF Edge YouTube channel.

LF Energy
- LF Energy Summit 2024 took place 5-6 September in Brussels, with a sell-out crowd. The event featured 34 breakout sessions, five keynotes, seven lightning talks, nine live demos, seven working group and project meetups, and three interactive workshops. Videos of all sessions are available.
- LF Energy restructured its project ecosystem, and also welcomed new members from the technology and electrical utility communities. Read more about the latest momentum in this press release.
- Security audits were completed by LF Energy in partnership with OSTIF on the OperatorFabric and SEAPATH projects.
- LF Research and LF Energy have published a new report, “Open Source and Energy Interoperability”, produced thanks to a grant from Natural Resources Canada. The report explores how open source solves the issue of interoperability amongst distributed energy sources.
- The OpenSynth project community has now released the model’s synthetic outputs openly. The dataset contains 10 million synthetic load profiles trained on over 300 million smart meter readings from 20,000 Octopus Energy UK households sampled between 2021 and 2022.
LF Networking

Open 3D Foundation
- O3DE will be revealing a new mascot soon! We invited the community to help design it, and we were blown away by the amazing submissions. We also asked the community to vote for their favorite design.

- O3DE will be at ROSCon 2024 as a platinum co-sponsor with our member company Robotec.ai. This collaboration underscores our commitment to advancing robotics and providing innovative solutions within the O3DE framework.
Open Mainframe Project
- This year, the Open Mainframe Project Mentorship Program set a new record for applicants with more than 1,600 developers and students appling for the 10 mentorships. The project welcomed 14 mentees from June 1st-August 31 to the Zowe, Galasa, Software Discovery Tool, Feilong, COBOL Programming Course and Mainframe Modernization Working Group communities. The mentee recently gave their final presentations and blogged abour their experience. Learn more about their experience here.
- Mainframe Voices is a video series created by Rahat Khan, Student at Starex University, for his mentorship with the Mainframe Modernization Working Group. He worked with mentors Misty Decker from Kyndryl and Bruno Azenha from Red Hat to gather different perspectives from experts on mainframe technology and mainframe modernization. The goal was to highlight the importance and future of mainframes in today's technology landscape. Watch the first three videos here.
- Aazam Thakur, a senior year engineering student majoring in Artificial Intelligence & Data Science at the University of Mumbai, participated in the Feilong Mentorship. With guidance from mentors Eric Bischoff and Mike Friesenegger from SUSE, he worked to improve the Feilong packaging process to make deployment easier. - In this month’s episode of the “I am a Mainframer” podcast,, Steven Dickens, Vice President and Practice Leader at The Futurum Group, interviews industry Leader Sam Golob. Sam dives into the fascinating history of the CBT Tape, a crucial collection of user-written software that started in the 1970s and is now part of The Open Mainframe Project. What began as a physical tape shared among mainframe professionals has evolved into an online repository that continues to serve the mainframe community. Watch or listen here.

Bomctl streamlines the management of Software Bill of Materials (SBOM) by enabling users to retrieve, manipulate, and integrate multiple SBOMs seamlessly. Overture Maps Foundation
- Using Overture Maps building footprints and GERS IDs, Overture member Addresscloud processed 300 million buildings for flood risk assessment. This integration enabled sub-200ms performance at scale, enhancing customer satisfaction with high-quality risk scores. Explore the full case study.
- Overture’s developer advocacy team works on tools, guides, and sites that help developers evaluate and access Overture's data. Beta 2 of the Overture Maps Explorer site is now live! Work with individual types, pin the data you want to see.
- Shadowmap is using Overture Maps data for buildings. The buildings theme has data for 2.3B buildings worldwide built with data from OpenStreetMap, Esri, Microsoft and Google and building heights derived from U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) 3DEP Lidar. And its all open! Learn more.
- Overture recently attended the Automotive Grade Linux (AGL) All Member Meeting in Berlin, where we discussed Overture's potential to accelerate automotive industry's transition to software-defined vehicles. EuroP4 - Registration Open!
- EuroP4 is taking place on October 28th and will be held in conjunction with the IEEE International Conference on Network Protocols (ICNP 2024), in Charleroi, Belgium.
- This event brings together networking researchers and practitioners to discuss cutting-edge, P4-enabled research and P4-based technology. The workshop provides a venue for presenting and discussing research and projects related to P4, as well as for more broadly discussing the needs of this research community.

SONiC
- SONiC Foundation hosted a half-day SONiC Mini summit, co-located with Open Source Summit EU in Vienna on September 19. Topics included SONiC continuous integration to data center management. Stay tuned for video recordings of the sessions on the SONiC YouTube channel.
- SONiC will host a series of events at the OCP Global Summit, including a half-day workshop on October 15 and interactive booth demos from October 15-17, showcasing the latest innovations in networking and NOS management. A second workshop on October 18 will offer additional insights into SONiC’s advancements and applications. Grab your spot before it runs out!
- The SONiC Workshop India 2024 brought together 180+ industry experts, developers, and community members to share insights on the future of open source NOS. With engaging presentations, keynotes, and strong community participation, the event was a huge success and promises to grow even bigger next year. Tazama
- Tazama Gains Prestigious Recognition as a Digital Public Good from the Digital Public Goods Alliance. The Digital Public Goods Alliance (DPGA) is a multi-stakeholder initiative endorsed by the United Nations Secretary-General, working to accelerate the attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals in low- and middle-income countries by facilitating the discovery, development, use of, and investment in digital public goods. The mission of the Tazama is to develop and maintain an open source fraud detection mechanism for instant payment systems, in order to improve the safety of using those systems, particularly for the poorest and most vulnerable customers that those systems serve.
Ultra Ethernet Consortium
- Ultra Ethernet Consortium (UEC) is thrilled to welcome 40 additional companies to the consortium since March 2024. We have welcomed nearly 100 members since the launch of the project! Read the latest membership announcement.
- As UEC approaches the release of its 1.0 specification, many key aspects have been finalized. We're excited to now reveal more about what the first version of the innovative Ultra Ethernet standard will offer.
The Unified Acceleration Foundation (UXL Foundation)
- The UXL Foundation had its one year anniversary. Rod Burns, head of the UXL Foundation Steering Committee, discussed the year and accomplishments in his blog entitled: GE HealthCare and SK Hynix join UXL Foundation on one year anniversary. We are excited to welcome GE Healthcare as a Steering Member to the UXL Foundation; as well as SK Hynix as a General Member. Intel also wrote a blog for the UXL Foundation Birthday: Happy Birthday Unified Acceleration Foundation (UXL)
- The oneAPI Dev Summit, hosted by the UXL Foundation on October 9 & 10 is now open for registration. Join us for an in-depth showcase of oneAPI specification along with open-source projects that implement oneAPI specification on October 9 & 10. oneAPI is designed to enable developers to use a single code base across multiple accelerators and architectures, supporting artificial intelligence, high performance computing, edge computing, automotive, and more. We welcome you for two days across global time zones to discover how oneAPI is being used today and explore its future.
- UXL Foundation attended the PyTorch Foundation and Open Source Summit in Vienna and had presence in both Arm and Intel’s booths, as well as the keynote at the OSS Summit. (OSS Vienna Keynote by LF Gabriele Columbro below).
- Imagination Technologies announced the Highest Performance Automotive GPU IP with FuSa Advancement including commitment to open standards defined by the UXL Foundation.
- Contribute to the future of UXL projects: We now have various work packages in progress that have come from the Working Group. These are tracked in the GitHub repository and linked from here. The build infrastructure work is starting and this will expand the public testing and CI capabilities of the projects. We welcome your contributions of community infrastructure once the basics are in place. Please join the Working Group meetings monthly to learn more about these and get involved in the decision making for new work packages and initiatives. Sign up to the mailing list to receive an invitation. Propose what you would like to see, so bring those ideas to the group through the Slack, mailing list or meetings. Join the Slack channels for discussions on the projects, specs and groups, and don’t forget you can find all meeting minutes and proposals on our GitHub repositories. There is a monthly Open Source Working Group meeting as well as upcoming AI and Safety Critical SIG meetings. Zephyr Project
- The Zephyr Project hosted a workshop on September 19 at Open Source Summit Europe in VIenna that included a few Zephyr RTOS presentations and a hands-on session. Håkan Jansson, Field Application Engineer at Infineon Technologies (pictured) is leading attendees through their first Zephyr application installation. They're building the classic Blinky app and programming it on the AIROC™ CYW20829 Bluetooth LE MCU Evaluation Kit. It’s an exciting opportunity to get practical experience with Zephyr and Infineon’s cutting-edge hardware.

- The Zephyr community was in full-force at Open Source Summit Europe with ambassadors and community members presentating best practics, solutions and tips for developers while attendees stopped by the booth to ask questions, get their kites and more. - Roy Jamil, Embedded Systems Training Engineer at Ac6, recaps the first-ever Zephyr Project meetup in Paris, France. Hosted by Ac6, this event brought together enthusiasts, developers, and industry leaders to discuss and explore the latest developments in the Zephyr RTOS. NXP, co-organized the meetup and provided attendees with FRDM MCXN947 boards, allowing participants to delve into practical applications using Zephyr. Learn more.
