Aava Mobile Joins Linux Foundation
Maker of open device reference platform looks to Linux collaboration for new smartphones and tablets
SAN FRANCISCO, October 14, 2010 – The Linux Foundation, the nonprofit organization dedicated to accelerating the growth of Linux, today announced that Aava Mobile has become its newest member. It will participate in the MeeGo project with specific emphasis around x86-based devices and the mobile user interface.
ABI Research reported just last quarter that Linux-oriented initiatives in the mobile industry demonstrate that Linux is a key technology for the future of mobile. For example, the report found that the growth of Linux-enabled smartphones will outpace the growth of total smartphones, with Linux-based devices comprising 33 percent of the market by 2015.
“Linux is playing a significant role in the future of computing and is a critical element of our business and technology strategy,” said Tero Nygard, Chief Technology Officer, Aava Mobile. “We have been contributing to the MeeGo project and other efforts for some time, so our Linux Foundation membership is an evolution of that commitment to the community.”
Aava Mobile earlier this year announced the world’s first fully open mobile device for next generation smartphones and tablets. The reference design is open on the hardware side with its standardized I/O ports and on the software side with its MeeGo and Android operating systems. Aava’s design is based on Intel’s next-generation Intel Atom platform and is being used by systems manufacturers and carriers.
“It is important to the advancement of Linux in the mobile and embedded space that companies like Aava Mobile are involved in community projects like MeeGo,” said Amanda McPherson, vice president of marketing and developer programs, The Linux Foundation. “We welcome Aava Mobile and look forward to its contributions to The Linux Foundation and to Linux.”
The Linux Foundation’s membership is made up of thousands of individual and corporate members, as well as affiliates: http://www.linuxfoundation.org/about/members. The aggregate contributions from these members advance the operating system to compete in the enterprise and on next-generation computing devices.
