APLcomp Joins The Linux Foundation

As financial services moves computing to the cloud, APLcomp increases investment in Linux

SAN FRANCISCO, September 9, 2010 – The Linux Foundation, the nonprofit organization dedicated to accelerating the growth of Linux, today announced that APLcomp is its newest member.

APLcomp is an ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) software vendor that primarily serves the financial services industry. An increasing number of its customers are deploying applications in the cloud and are recognizing the advantages of using an open operating system to support this infrastructure.

A huge consideration for IT managers is how to ensure interoperability and distribution across cloud infrastructure and networks. The openness inherent in Linux is making it a popular choice for supporting cloud-computing operations today. As outlined in a paper published by The Linux Foundation and titled “Linux: The Operating System of the Cloud,” the operating system is naturally suited to support cloud computing due to its strengths in compatibility, licensing, power, scalability, standards and virtualization (http://www.linuxfoundation.org/sites/main/files/publications/linuxincloud.html).

“The rise of cloud computing in the financial services industry places new demands on software distribution, security and support for our customers,” said Martti Pitkanen. “Linux addresses all of these demands and our Linux Foundation membership will extend APLcomp’s collaboration with community and industry to advance the operating system in the most technically advanced environments and for the most mission-critical applications.”

In the financial services industry specifically, the complexity of contracts management is increasing rapidly due to new demands placed on risk management, collateral and reporting. APLcomp is using a cloud-based strategy that includes a Linux-based GUI desktop interface to provide immediate end user support for new features and functionalities.

“We welcome APLcomp as The Linux Foundation’s newest member,” said Amanda McPherson, vice president of marketing and developer programs. “Their long history and critical role in the financial services industry makes their membership and increased collaboration a natural move.”

APLcomp participates in The Linux Foundation’s Open Compliance Program (http://www.linuxfoundation.org/programs/legal/compliance) and will attend the upcoming End User Summit October 12-13, 2010 (http://events.linuxfoundation.org/events/end-user-summit).
