Meyer Sound Joins Linux Foundation
Pioneer in audio engineering using embedded Linux to innovate in music and cinema industries
SAN FRANCISCO, April 12, 2010 – The Linux Foundation, the nonprofit organization dedicated to accelerating the growth of Linux, today announced that Berkeley, Calif.-based professional audio equipment manufacturer, Meyer Sound Laboratories, is its newest member.
Founded in 1979, Meyer Sound has been a leading developer and manufacturer of professional sound reinforcement equipment for a broad range of applications including live sound, performing arts, theatre, recording studios, churches and most recently, cinema. The company currently uses embedded Linux in the development of the D-Mitri™ digital audio platform and Galileo® loudspeaker management system allowing for a lightweight, powerful, stable and customizable development platform.
By joining the Linux Foundation, Meyer Sound will expand its participation in the Linux Foundation’s embedded Linux activities.
“Meyer Sound is a strong supporter of open source principles and Linux represents both a technology and philosophy for us,” said John McMahon, Executive Director – Digital Products, Meyer Sound. “Using Linux provides us with a comprehensive environment for our demanding applications. Our Linux Foundation membership formalizes the work we’ve been doing with the community and increases our ability to collaborate and contribute.”
“Embedded Linux doesn’t just mean mobile phones. Linux is used in an increasing variety of devices, and Meyer Sound is one of the original examples of this,” said Amanda McPherson, vice president of marketing and developer programs at The Linux Foundation. “Meyer Sound has long understood the value of Linux, and we’re happy to welcome them as a new member.”
Recent applications of Meyer Sound’s technology include its use in Dubai’s Meydan, the world’s largest racecourse; and in American Zoetrope, the film studio created by filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola, which used its new Cinema Experience system to mix Sofia Coppola’s upcoming film “Somewhere.”
Meyer Sound will participate in this week’s Linux Foundation Collaboration Summit April 14-16, 2010 in San Francisco: http://events.linuxfoundation.org/events/collaboration-summit.
