Platform-independent SDN provider increases contributions to Linux community to advance virtual networking, tracing and security

PORTLAND, Ore. // OSCON // July 20, 2015 — The Linux Foundation, the nonprofit organization dedicated to accelerating the growth of Linux and collaborative development announced today that PLUMgrid has joined the organization as a Gold member.

Gold membership is the second-highest corporate membership tier at The Linux Foundation and demonstrates a significant commitment and investment in open source. Gold members of The Linux Foundation today include Bloomberg, Cisco, Citrix, the Electronics and Telecommunications Institute (ETRI), Facebook, Google, Hitachi, Huawei, NetApp, Panasonic, Renesas, SR Tech Labs, SUSE, Toshiba, Toyota and Verizon Terremark.

PLUMgrid is a leader in secure and scalable virtual networking for OpenStack clouds and is a platform-independent software-defined networking (SDN) company. The company started contributing to the Linux community since it was founded in 2011. Building on Linux as the enabling technology for virtual networking, PLUMgrid upstreamed code to the kernel and enhanced Berkeley Packet Filter (eBPF) to deliver flexibility and performance for functions such as networking, tracing and security. PLUMgrid today is shipping PLUMgrid ONS for OpenStack for hybrid data centers to connect tenants, applications and workloads efficiently across virtualized, container, and bare metal resources.

By joining The Linux Foundation, PLUMgrid will help advance the Linux ecosystem and developments in SDN, network functions virtualization (NFV), tracing and security. As a new Linux Foundation Gold member, PLUMgrid will continue to contribute technology and resources to the broader community development and collaboration behind Linux.

PLUMgrid is already a Silver founding member of the collaborative OpenDaylight Project, a community-led and industry-supported open source framework that will accelerate adoption, foster new innovation and create a more open and transparent approach to SDN. PLUMgrid participates in the area of Virtual Network Infrastructure, including technology and innovative ideas on creating a more flexible framework for network application and services development.

“Our phenomenal engineering team has not only led innovation in network virtualization, but they’ve made sustained and meaningful contributions to the Linux kernel, including technologies—like the development of eBPF—which are key components in building networks that are agile, fast and secure,” said Larry Lang, CEO of PLUMgrid.

“The PLUMgrid commitment to Linux gives it a compelling market advantage,“ said Jim Zemlin, executive director at The Linux Foundation. “Their Gold Membership in the Linux Foundation elevates their team’s visibility to build interest in and a community around solving specific networking problems that can benefit their customers and the larger Linux community.”
